Her music can still be heard all over Egypt and the countries of the Middle East/North Africa. Come and learn about Om Kalthoum’s history, her life story, her roots, her career, and her lasting impact on Arabic music and Egyptian identity.
Join us for a fascinating exploration - film viewing, presentation, conversation, questions and answers about this unmatched Diva of Egyptian song. In the time she lived, she achieved more than any woman in the arts – a powerful testimony to her talent and determination.
We dance to many pieces of music written for her - music, which speaks to the hearts of people of these cultures today. In that spirit, we will also explore, moving/dancing to one of her most noted songs, “Ente Omri”, learning how to effectively interpret the music through our movement.

Balance Props -- 10am-11:30am
Balancing something on your head is difficult. Balancing something on your head while moving, dancing, smiling, and breathing, all while making it look effortless seems impossible. But it's not. It just takes some know how and lots of practice. We'll go over balance technique and use many different props to balance.
Bring a large hard cover book and whatever balance props you have that you'd like to work with. Sword, cane, tray, pot, basket, etc.
Sassy Saidi: 12pm-1:30pm
Mahira will show you twirling, dance movements moments with the cane, poses and combos, as well as balancing the cane.
Bring your cane and/or stick (large dowel rod will work) and we'll have some sassy fun.
Dig your axis into the technique for revolving and rotating. Get your calibrated spins and paddle turns in sync with the beat and with other dancers. Get your hook turns tall and solid.
We’ll build from the ground up through the axis of rotation all the way to the top of your head. We’ll address momentum, control and the all important spotting.
